  1. This video reminds me of the first time that I had a socratic seminar. I kept asking questions to answer them, and they were so confused!

  2. This is a scenario that I deal with in my class daily. AP students are grade motivated students, and it takes a while for them to break from that. I like to tell them that I am trying to "SET THEIR MINDS FREE" I am Morpheus and they are trapped in the Matrix.

I think the more teachers can create authentic learning the more comfortable students will be with taking risks.

  3. This video did a great job reflecting the difficulty a lot of honors students have in their (typically) first AP class- world history. The course is set up to be very student centered, and the students have a hard time grasping the concept that the knowledge they gain is from their work (reading, asking questions, discussions, etc) and their work as opposed to me lecturing all the time. However, once they get the hang of being a learner as opposed to a student, they excel.

  4. Students want to know what their bare minimum requirements are to get an A and just get by.

  5. What is this craziness! Students thinking for themselves...but then how can I push my liberal agenda

  6. It is a big leap for some students to go from being a teacher-pleasing student to a curious learner.

  7. Students are also overwhelmed with all their classes and assignments and can't seem to keep their schedules aligned. I have to keep them on track by assigning very specific page numbers every single day or they procrastinate until day before the test.

  8. I loved that the teacher "answered" his student's question with a question...I have a tendency to do that as well. Also, so many of our little dears are more focused on making the "A" rather than on the educational experience. I'm hoping that this session will give me some new tricks to spice up the 1:1 project for the AP students.

  9. Students do seem to want their assignments just handed to them instead of being active learners. They sometimes become uncomfortable with the looser boundaries at first if allowed to seek out knowledge on their own.

  10. ahhhh Mr. V I agree with that statement...what do I need to do to keep the teacher happy and make sure they like me versus learning and exploring the subect

  11. I love answering their questions with a question, but I'm not very good at it...

  12. And some of them are satisfied with a B! I love the idea of them actually becoming learners.

  13. khofer has a very unflattering name for these students...shall I share?
It makes me crazy that they want to know the correct letter of the answer rather than the entire answer
